A Modest Ego

I’m humble to a rare degree,
A finer soul you’ll seldom see.
I never boast, I merely state
That being modest makes me great.

I shun applause, disdain acclaim,
Though statues ought to bear my name.
I never seek the public eye;
It seeks me out as I pass by.

I ask for neither praise nor glory,
Though both would complement my story.
And if my virtues seem immense,
I must applaud your common sense.
